Another beautiful day

Another beautiful day!  SUNTRUST DAY 2 went as smoothly as STD1!  Another great team of workers.  Today STD2 team was able to set up scaffolding around three sides of the house; wrap 3 sides in Tyvek, and get the house ready for STD3 team will be able to “raise the roof”! When we arrived in the chilly morning, there were several folks that claimed to be “afraid of heights”...however, by the time we left, those fears were gone - AND THEY HAVE PICTURES TO PROVE IT!!  Today we had a father/son team; a husband/wife team; and a very hard worker who had a kidney transplant less than one year ago!  Again, tomorrow’s STD3 team has big muddy boots to fill.  WAY TO GO TEAM SUNTRUST!!  Thanks for all your help and helping to support Women’s History Month.

Searching the internet for my old college friend Clare Thompson. I’m hoping she is the one mentioned in the above blog and she will write back to me. We lost contact some years ago & I miss talking to her!

I want to give a “shout out” to my friends from SunTrust who offered up their time and energy for three days - as well as a significant contribution from SunTrust (hours and dollars!) to the effort!  We had two husband and wife teams, a mother and daughter team and a father and son team - thank heavens for SPRING BREAK!  Although, I’m not sure this was exactly what our two college folks expected for spring break.  The family that builds together stays together!  We even had a gentleman volunteering who had a kidney transplant LESS THAN ONE YEAR AGO!! NOW THAT’S DEDICATION!

No serious injuries…a couple of splinters, one hammer connecting to a head, couple of sunburns and many blisters.  All in all…a good time was had by all!

And in no particular order, I give you my heros!

STD1 team: Christopher Levins, Shannon Hyman, Tamara Smith, Shannon Spivey Lutton, Shemecka Rose, Kate Beck, Barry Clark, Carol Burton, Melanie Reid, David Vladimirou, Anne Strine, Nicole Chamberlain, Dave Terry, Norma Rao, Jason Price-THANKS FOR TWO DAYS JASON!, Ravi Kallamadi, Reauchan Wood, Susan Darling, Melissa Martin, Josh Cochran, Bettie Hilliard, Avery Hilliard, Jean Kohrn, and David Deland.

STD2 Team - Gail Taylor, Kathy Blackmore, Joyce Edwards, Liz Lafarr, Lori Rojas, Valerie Joye, Laura English, Lee Chapman, Elizabeth Fisher, Tom Davis, Rebecca Doucet, Faith Kennedy, Walter Pleasants, Lisa Miranda, Jake Labello, Helen Ford, Ronald Champion, Sherita Grooms, Jasmine Davis, Kay Nicholas, Tiffany Sealy, John Kennedy, Holly Eberly, Devin Floyd, Todd Rudzinski, and Jared Labello.

STD3 Team - Sherry Morales, Yashica Dennis, Alice Talley, Nancy Curry, Christine Anderson, Katrina McMillan, Alina Brik, Michael Keegan, Barbara Taggart, Kimberly Goodlet, Holly Price, Peggy Ford, Lavon Foxx, Arnold Lewis, Shabir Khan, Tivoli Pleasants, Sheila Ranson, Sissie Updike, Michelle Collins-Robinson, Danique Blowe, Shona Price, Jill Allen, Nancy Spangenthal, Molly Spangenthal, Kathy Stevens, Jason Price and Clare Thompson.

We also had a couple of “walk-on” volunteers join us…sadly I only have the name of one of them…Mariah.  She was there I believe for all 3 days!  Mariah - THANKS!

...That’s a wrap!

Volunteers on SunTrust Day 3 RAISE THE ROOF!
Literally and figuratively!  On the 3rd and final SunTrust day we had even more beautiful weather and an equally hard working team as day 1 and day 2.  The morning started off a little chilly…frosty even.  As ususal, it didn’t take long to warm right up.  While the STD3 team waited for the Crane Man to arrive, they “beautified” the build sites a bit.  After the wind storm on Saturday, building materials and general contractor trash was all over the place.  From beautification to completing the Tyvek and preparing for the arrival of windows on Friday.  When that was done and the Crane Man was still no where in site…the STD3 team started on one of the other houses…it appeared to need a bit of Tyvek and prep for new shiny windows as well…DONE!

Now it was time for lunch…and who should arrive right along with lunch but the CRANE MAN!  We all know that nothing comes between a sweaty hard working construction team and a cold drink along with lunch!  So, this time - the CRANE MAN waited for us.  Actually it only took about six or eight teammates to get the process started so it left a bit of an extended lunchtime for the others.  Before no time, the trusses were flying though the air and hammers began nailing!  By then, it was 3:00 and time to call it quits.  However, Bill asked for 8 or 10 folks to volunteer to get a row of plywood on the roof to make it an easier start for the folks from Q94 the next day.  OF COURSE, WE HAD FOLKS VOLUNTEER WITHOUT HESITATION!  They continued for just under an hour and the dust settled and everyone was gone.  In the quiet, this writer sat back and admired the work that the SunTrust team did over the past three days! I don’t know why, but I am always AMAZED at what about 75 folks can do in just 3 days!  I should be very much aware because over the past six years, I have seen SunTrust teams accomplish this and MUCH MUCH more in three days.  I am proud and honored to be a part of the Habitat Women Build TEAM SUNTRUST!  Congratulations guys on a job well done!
